Dougherty Submits an Application to Become District Attorney for the Twentieth Judicial District & Suspends Attorney General Campaign

GOLDEN, CO – Today, Michael Dougherty submitted an application for the upcoming vacancy in the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office to Governor Hickenlooper. As a result of this decision, Michael Dougherty has suspended his campaign for Attorney General until a decision is made by Governor Hickenlooper.

Michael Dougherty issued the following statement:

“Over eight months ago, we launched this campaign for Attorney General because of my continued commitment to a career in public service. From serving as a leader in multiple prosecutors’ offices, I know how important it is for leaders to have management experience, courtroom skills, and integrity.

This incredible journey has taken me across this state and allowed me the privilege of speaking with so many wonderful people. The support that I have gained throughout this campaign has been one of the most humbling experiences in my lifetime – each day I am reminded of the importance of public service and working together to overcome the challenges we face.

Today, I am suspending my campaign for Attorney General to pursue the vacancy in the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office. This decision was not an easy one. Stan Garnett’s recent decision to leave the District Attorney’s Office presents an important opportunity to continue my life’s work in the community in which my family and I live. Over the past few weeks, I have received a tremendous amount of encouragement from leaders in the legal community and law enforcement to pursue the opening for Boulder DA. I am honored by their support of this decision to do so. As a resident of Boulder, the opportunity to serve my family, friends, and neighbors as their District Attorney would be an incredible honor and privilege.

I do not feel comfortable continuing to campaign and communicating with the public as a candidate for Attorney General while actively seeking another position. Should I be selected by Governor Hickenlooper to serve as District Attorney, I will continue to bring the quality of service and leadership that Stan Garnett has exemplified in that office over the last nine years. I will work hard to ensure public safety, while continuing to advocate for progressive issues and reforms to our criminal justice system. I will also take the lessons I have learned from my statewide campaign and use my office to call attention to injustices because all Coloradans deserve equality, fair treatment and protection of their rights.

My entire career has been dedicated to public service, and I hope to have the honor of continuing to do so as the next District Attorney of Boulder County.”
